Drought Tolerant Non-native Garden

This garden is on a steep site in Keilor in the north west of Melbourne. This area, considered dry at the best of times, has had a continuous drought rating of "extreme dry" since 2001.

The client preferred not to have a native garden, so a range of extremely drought tolerant plants was carefully selected. Establishment watering using a dripper system carried the garden through Autumn and Winter.

The growth shown here all occurred within the first eight month period after planting.

The watering regime has now been significantly reduced and thanks to careful selection and substantial mulching, the current growth rate is impressive!
